Wijnaldum keen on sealing a deal with AS Roma

Georginio Wijnaldum is set to leave PSG for AS Roma.

The Netherlands international has emerged as a prime target for Roma boss José Mourinho, reports suggest, but there are likely to be several obstacles to getting a deal over the line.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma wants to initially loan Wijnaldum, but it may include a clause to make it permanent next summer. The only stumbling block at the minute is Wijnaldum’s wages and this is what Roma are hoping to make a swift agreement on.

Il Corriere dello Sport believes Wijnaldum is keen on a move to Roma and would like the deal to be sorted out quickly.

Why does it look likely for Wijnaldum to exit PSG?

Reports in France suggest Wijnaldum is not in new PSG boss Christophe Gaultier’s plan. The 31-year-old was left out of PSG’s squad for their pre-season tour of Japan, where Christophe Galtier experimented with a 3-4-1-2 formation after Pochettino favoured the 4-3-3.

Such a system would further restrict Wijnaldum’s opportunities for starts in the middle, and PSG have already made one midfield signing this summer in the form of Vitinha.

A move for Lille’s Renato Sanches is not dead in the water just yet either, and Wijnaldum is therefore widely expected to head for the exit door in the next few weeks.

Despite interest from Premier League clubs such as Leicester City, Everton, Wolves, and West Ham, Roma have a better shot to seal the Netherlands international due to intimate contacts in recent days.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder won the Ligue 1 title while at PSG last campaign.
